Important reminder: Save all work in team's Google Working Folder
ALL of your capstone deliverables for your leadership courses (ex: project canvas workbook, project plan, etc.) and work need to be added to your team's Google Working Folder.
If these files are not currently located in your team's working folder, please do so by no later than Monday, Jan 22, Noon. These will be used for grading, sharing with your capstone project advisor, and also your 270K coaches. The purpose of the project working folder is to help your team keep documents in one place.
If you are having trouble accessing the folder or need clarification please let the capstone team know asap so we can help resolve by emailing funginstitute@berkeley.edu.
As MEng students, you're eligible for a variety of software packages you may find helpful for capstone projects.
You also have access to in-person trainings, and online resources all of which may provide value for your projects.
NOTE: The program staff will be enrolling you in these courses (behind the scenes). Teams were emailed the week of December 18, 2023 confirming 295/270K sections assignments. Check your berkeley email for details. Given the complexity of the matching process, only change requests due to extenuating circumstances will be considered at this point.
The program staff will enroll you in three capstone courses before the start of Spring instruction:
ENGIN 295: team-based Communications for Engineering Leaders
ENGIN 270K: team-based Coaching for High Performing Teams
ENGIN 296MB: The Capstone Project
The capstone is one of your signature experiences in the MEng program and learning to work collaboratively in a team is what will prepare you to jump start your success as a technical leader in your career. To maximize the benefits of this opportunity please make sure to prioritize this course with your team. We are excited to watch you grow as a team over this next semester!
Schedule your first spring team meeting. During the meeting, review reporting deliverables and teaming deliverables that are integrated with your capstone project:
Continue your weekly meetings with your Project Advisor(s) for Spring.
Continue your weekly meetings with your capstone teammates for Spring.
During your advising meeting, discuss criteria for success.
Unlike traditional classes, E296 The Capstone Project does not have a syllabus or a grading scheme. It's up to your team and your advisor to discuss criteria for success (i.e., how you're going to be evaluated). For more info, check out "GRADING" section on this page of the handbook.
If you are on a project that's primarily advised by a PhD student or a post-doctoral researcher, you need to meet with your instructor-of-record.
Typically, these meetings occur at least once a month.
If you are on a partner-advised project, book a time to see your faculty liaison -- who's your instructor of record for E296 The Capstone Project -- no later than Feb 13.
You should see your faculty liaison at least twice this semester before the final presentation / evaluation. During the first meeting (no later than Feb 13): (i) share your progress; (ii) share your updated project plan.
During the second meeting (no later than March 20): (i) share your progress; (ii) share your final report outline; and (iii) share your updated project plan.
Refer to Welcome message, pre-coaching prep work and syllabus on bCourses.
The objective of the first module is to develop your ability to evaluate and communicate the current state of your project, so that you can increase your chances of a successful outcome.
Upload your prep-work on bCourses two days before your coaching meeting, so that your coach can review these.
Please note that coaching meetings start on the hour or half hour (NOT Berkeley time).
Upload your final module deliverables on bCourses by the end of the module; these will be graded by a GSI.
E295 classes begin the week of Jan 16. Refer to your instructor's bCourses.
A significant portion of the class will be dedicated to working on your reporting deliverables.
Refer to the 2024 Spring MEng Capstone Reporting Deliverables for details.
Capstone check-in meeting gives your team an opportunity to discuss and get feedback on project plans, team effectiveness, and deliverable reports. You're welcome to reach out and make an appointment; alternatively, Fung capstone staff will reach out to you.
