AUTUMN TERM

Year 4's Wall of fame

Congratulations to the following children who have had their work displayed on our wall of fame this week:

  • Evalyn S and Jonas A from 4HT

  • Caiden Q and Kian C from 4AM.

We are really proud of the work you have produced this week. Keep it up!

Look out for our next wall of fame stars coming soon.

4HT's Playground charter

Over the past few weeks, our focus has been on behaviour on the playground. Therefore Mr O'Neill set us the task of creating our own playground charter. We discussed how we should behave on the playground and created a list of rules we should follow every time we are on the playground. We all then signed the charter at the bottom with our fingerprint to agree that we are all going to try our hardest to follow all of the rules outlined on the charter. It is now on display outside our classroom for us all to see!

Maths End Goal

Today we reached the end of our Number and Place Value topic in maths and we completed our end goal. We applied what we have learned over the past half term to create a Roman timeline for our topic display board. We used our knowledge of sequencing to place key dates in chronological order and applied our knowledge of negative numbers to distinguish between BC and AD dates.

Our letters home

Last week in English, we have been writing letters about our first few weeks at school. We started by looking at the different features of an informal letter and practised these in our lessons. We then wrote our letters about all the fun things we have been getting up to so far in year 4, making sure to include all of the features we have looked at. On Friday, we wrote up the final version of our letters and designed our envelopes ready for them to be sent home.

Look out for our letters coming home; we are really looking forward to you reading them!

Place value investigation

This week in maths, we applied what we applied our knowledge of place value to carry out an investigation. We used place value counters to help us prove and disprove given statements. We then practised using reasoning sentence stems to provide explanations for our answers.

The Year 4 apprentice challenge

Last week, the children took part in the Year 4 apprentice challenge. They worked collaboratively in small groups to design a new product which would encourage children to wash their hands. Over the course of three days, the children brainstormed their ideas, designed their final product, created a presentation and pitched their ideas to the rest of the class. The children really enjoyed this activity and it was lovely to see all of their amazing ideas at the end of the week! The children successfully modelled all five of our TRICK values. Well done!

Resilience challenge

On Tuesday 8th September, we used our TRICK values of resilience and collaboration to investigate whether we could make a piece of plasticine float. The challenge proved quite tricky at the beginning but we persevered until we managed to create a design which would float on water.

The marshmallow and spaghetti challenge

On Monday 7th September, Year 4 developed their ability to work as a team by taking part in the marshmallow and spaghetti challenge. Working in groups of four, we worked collaboratively to create a stable structure using just marshmallows and spaghetti. During this challenge we demonstrated our school values of resilience, collaboration and innovation to create a variety of different structures.

Our unique sculptures

On Friday, we celebrated the fact that we are all unique by creating a sculpture all about us. We worked collaboratively to decide upon what each colour and shape represented. We all started with a piece of white paper which represented the fact that we were in Year 4 and then added the coloured strips according to our likes and dislikes. Each piece of artwork created was unique and allowed us to celebrate our differences.

We've had a fantastic start to Year 4! We are now in the process of getting into regular school routines and lessons. We have lots of exciting activities coming up that we can't wait to share with you. Keep checking back in for further updates.

Kind regards,

Year 4 staff
