ANOW - A Strategy for Answering Essay Questions
Eliminate “extra” or background information
Highlight any question words (who, what, where, when, why, how) and direction words (describe, explain, list, etc.)
Highlight keywords that let you know the ideas or concepts the question is focusing on (key words, names, etc.)
Write how many parts the question has (how many answers you need)
Put the question in your own words (check that you understand what you are being asked-clarify with your teacher when necessary)
Brainstorm a list of ideas that you can use to answer the question.
If you can use the book, write down the page number(s) where the answer can be found or important quotes can be found
Put notes in a logical order
Check that all parts of the question are answered
Get rid of extra information that isn’t asked about in the question
Write your answer. Be sure to use the format for a good paragraph or essay, depending on the requirements.
Reread to be sure your answer makes sense.
Reread the question and your answer to be sure you answered all parts of the question.
Reread to proofread your answer for spelling and mechanics.
