This money will help abolish poverty in the places that need it most. Madagascar is one of those places. Poverty is the reason behind why children in developing countries go to work. Children in Madagascar are being put do do certain types of physical labor that puts them in danger.
What is Happening in Madagascar?
Many children are working in mica mines. Mica mining involves sorting mica, which is a mineral. Mica is very dangerous to breathe in. Exposure to this mineral can irritate the lungs, and cause fibrosis (lung scarring). Many children in Madagascar work in mica mines, rather than attending school.
How is UNICEF helping?
Unicef supports cash transfer programs which advocates for children and family in need. These programs help families in Madagascar pay for necessities such as food and clothing. This money lets families focus on paying for their children's school fees. This program has reached about 12,000 families since launching in 2017.
Child trafficking is a type of forced labor, which means children are forced to do an action against their will. This money will specifically go to child trafficking in the U.S, which is a huge problem currently.
What is Happening in the U.S?
child trafficking in the U.S includes sex trafficking and labor trafficking (forced work). According to UNICEF, "Child trafficking is the recruitment, coercion, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of children under the age of 18 for the purpose of exploitation."
