Like so many of my designs, this collection started with a special moment for the people I love. My train-loving grandson, Teddy, was turning two. He and my husband spend hours playing with the model train set in our home, so I wanted to make Teddy a birthday celebration that felt like a warm hug.
But to be completely honest with you, paper can be a funny thing, and it definitely had its own plans at first! It took me five prototypes to get this train running smoothly. I had gold wheel rims smushing against tracks , and a 3D cowcatcher that refused to fold flat. My recycling bin was absolutely overflowing with red and gold cardstock scraps!
But I kept going because I knew the pure joy it would bring. I did all the failing for you in my studio so that you can skip straight to the magic of a finished masterpiece! I’ve hand-tested and tweaked every single layer so that when you hit 'Make' on your Cricut or Silhouette, it just works seamlessly.

1. The "All Aboard" Invitation
Every great adventure starts with an invitation! This beautiful card features a nostalgic steam train silhouette and the words “All Aboard”. It measures 7 inches wide by 5 inches tall and comes with its own custom A7 envelope template to set the theme before guests even arrive.
This is any easy project. There are two layers: the gold under layer and then the red overlayer and a couple of black pieces: the "all aboard" words and the steam train. The inside is blank so you can write or print your invitation information.

2. The "Choo Choo" Birthday Banner
Frame your party table or mantle with eye-catching railroad style. This banner features the words "Choo Choo," numbers 0–9 to customize the birthday age, classic Railroad Crossing signs, tracks, and steam train elements to string together.
This fun layered project has a few pieces, but is pretty straightforward to assemble. You can either string them together as a banner or hang them individually around the room. Either way, they will be super cute for your party decorations.

This is the true star of the dessert table! It’s a gorgeous, intricate centerpiece featuring a multi-layered steam engine puffing real-looking cardstock smoke. It also includes numbers 0–9 so you can customize it completely for your guest of honor.

What’s a party without photo-ops? This charming, wearable paper party hat is structured to assemble easily and looks absolutely adorable on the little conductors at the party. You can easily make them yourself with two colors of cardstock or paper and a little glue. The straps connect to the hat with fool-proof connectors and can be adjusted to fit any size, big or little. Just put them on the child's head and tape together in the back to fit.

When working with 3D paper crafts that have intricate folds, I highly recommend using a bone folder or scraper. After your machine scores the lines, gently fold the paper backwards and forwards a couple of times and burnish the edge. This gives the cardstock extra flexibility, leaving your project looking crisp, sharp, and beautifully professional!
