Hello there! I want to pull back the curtain today and show you something that usually stays hidden in the scrap bin under my craft desk.
It all started when my train-loving grandson was turning 2. He and my husband love playing with the model train set-up in our house! I wanted to make a special train card for him. I had a vision of a 3 dimensional antique steam locomotive that popped out of the card when it opened, but the paper had other plans! To be honest, there were moments when I thought this Train Pop-Up Card might never see the light of day.
I believe that crafting should be a quiet escape—a chance to create something meaningful with your hands. But I also know that nothing ruins that "flow" faster than a design that just won't work. That is why I do the "failing" for you, so you can skip straight to the joy of the finished masterpiece.
Walk with me through the process of designing this adorable card. Although the process was frustrating at times, the end result is that it will be a joyful assembly for you. Here is a look at the road to "READY":
I originally designed the card for my train-loving grandson’s 2-year birthday. I wanted it to represent a late 19th century steam locomotive. So, I studied a lot of pictures and decided not to make it an authentic replica of any one train. Also, I wanted a little passenger car in the back, even though a real steam train would have had a coal car there.
This design was pretty bare, but my grandson liked it anyway. When I decided to make the design available to you all, I knew I could do better.
I had designed the gold wheel rims a little too large. When the card closed the wheels got smushed up against the tracks. Also, the original design had a red overlay on the Boiler section. This was pretty, but it inhibited the pop-up, so it needed to go. Most steam trains didn't have painted boilers anyway.
At this point, I thought it needed a little more decoration. I had removed the overlay for the boiler. I tried adding gold roofs and boiler face plate. However, these all seemd to get in the say. Also, the gold wheel rims were still too large and would not fold.
I perfected the roof and boiler decorations so they closed perfectly into the card. Then, I decided to add a cow catcher at the front, but the boiler folds were now fighting with the cow catcher and kept the pop up from folding flat. Let’s just say my recycling bin was very full of red and gold cardstock scraps!
When that last version finally popped up—smooth, sturdy, and perfect—I actually cheered out loud in my studio.
That is the 'magic' I want you to feel when you craft.
I’ve spent the hours tweaking the folds and testing the tolerances so that when you hit 'Make' on your machine, it just works. I’ve done the failing for you, so you can skip straight to the joy of the finished masterpiece.
The template comes with a train tracks-themed envelope, the cover of the card is super cute!
