Reading and Writing at Home

Many parents ask for ways to support their child at home in reading and writing. For the youngest readers, encourage them to notice print in the environment (Stop signs, McDonald’s, Target, Cheerios, etc.) Sing songs. Play word games together (Concentration, Go Fish, rhyming games, Zingo!). (You can see a suggested list of some fun phonological awareness activities in the documents below). Children should see reading and writing as enjoyable activities. Journal about summer adventures; send emails and write notes using words your child can read and write! Work together to write lists (shopping, things to do). Let your child see you reading for pleasure. Spend time reading to your child. Talk about what you are reading and what they are reading. Ask direct questions; ask silly questions; just ask! Reading is an active, not passive, activity!
