Literacy Events

Family Literacy Night

During this event, the reading team answers the questions, "Are you curious about the reading process? Do you want to know more about how literacy is taught at Davis? Are you interested in learning about ways to support your student(s) in their literacy development at home?" The night begins with Andrea Salipante, our K-5 ELA curriculum coordinator, sharing more about the development of the reading brain and how we teach reading at Davis. Caregivers then have a chance to visit tables that center around the 5 major components of reading (phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary and oral language development, and comprehension and fluency). A literacy specialist is at each table to answer questions and show ways to support literacy learning at home. Read Across America

Read Across America activites take place in March.  Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books.

Monday is Drop Everything And Read (or D.E.A.R.).  The whole school stops  what they are doing at 10:15  and have the shared experience of reading the same books across the building, even if they are in a special!  Tuesday at Davis has guest readers from the community, district administrators, and high school students that come to the classrooms and read books that celebrate literacy. The books reflect the diverse cultures and backgrounds of the students at Davis School, as well as offer a view of someone else's experiences.

Check out some of our pictures from previous  Read Across America celebrations at Davis.

Bingo for Books

Bingo for Books is  planned for May 29, 6:30-7:30.  This will be a fun-filled family night where we play Bingo together and celebrate literacy!

Students will come to the event with three bingo boards that they have filled out at home.  The words that students write (or cut and paste) on their boards are chosen from lists that our youngest students can connect with. These categories include teacher names,  favorite book characters, and summer words.

As each board is played, numerous winners arise.  We have planned and prepared for each student to “win” at least one book. In addition,  sometimes we raffle off best-selling titles and community-based prizes for adults.

If you are a local business owner and/ or would like to donate a raffle prize for this family event, please contact the main office. That way, students, adults and community members all leave Bingo for Books as winners!
