Students will arrive daily Ready To Learn. RTL means that students are prepared all necessary items for class including their binder, pencils, Chromebook as needed, and their homework.
Students are expected to actively participate in the learning process. Learning is a partnership between the teacher and the student.
Students are expected to give their best effort at all times.
Students must conduct themselves in a way that does not interfere with the learning of others.
Students are expected to complete their homework and bring it to class with them. Missing homework is homework that is not done!
Students are expected to check their grades online weekly. It is up to each student, and family, to keep track of missing assignments. I will remind students as much as possible, however, it is ultimately the responsibility of each student to manage his or her work.
Students are encouraged to advocate for themselves. Your son or daughter will know long before we do if there is a learning or social issue facing them in our classroom. They can talk to me at anytime and we can work together to find a solution.
Students are expected to work with their peers as classmates (or colleagues) collaboratively to complete work and solve problems.
Students should expect to be challenged. Learning is hard work.
Students are expected to show up. Just showing up counts for a huge part of each child’s success.
Finally, students are expected to come to school with an open mind and the willingness to try new things, work hard, and have fun (at times).
Students are expected to follow McKelvie school and classroom rules. Here is an example of our positive behavior plan that is used when redirection is needed.

The 5th grade ELA program is McGraw Hill Wonders. Students will read stories, relating to a larger unit theme. Using these stories and several novel studies, students will work with weekly reading and writing skills to develop their strategies. Additionally, students will become authors through experiencing the writing process within multiple genres of writing.

Our social studies curriculum focuses on the 5 regions of the United States. The students will learn about our 50 states. Among other details, students will learn all 50 states, capitals, abbreviations, and locations. Social Studies Alive is the textbook we use.
