We use the "Social Studies Alive" program in the fifth grade. Students will learn about the five United States regions, as well as the states and capitals. The five strands of social studies: geography, history, political science, economics, and culture will be our focus as we learn about the different regions.
Southeast Region: Chapter 6
Midwest Region: Chapter 8
Students will also be exposed to a mini unit on civics. Specifically they will learn about the three branches of the federal government, reviewing topics covered last year in 4th grade with their study of state government.
Students will have competencies in social studies. They can expect at least one knowledge competency (ex: knowledge of states, capitals and abbreviations) and one inquiry competency (ex: Read/Discuss & Respond) each quarter. Retakes are always available using this retake procedure.
