Grading System

Academic Learning Targets

The grading system followed at Whitford is standards based. Each assignment will fall under a specific standard and students will be evaluated on a scale of 1–4 based on how proficient they are in that specific standard. The academic band standards are as follows:

ALT 1 - Perform Music with Quality of Sound: I can perform music with quality sound.

AST 1.1 - Tone/Blend/Vowel:Tone/Blend/Vowel

AST 1.2 - Intonation:Intonation

AST 1.3 - Balance:Balance

ALT 2 - Technique: I can perform music with technique.

AST 2.1 - Articulation, Diction, Bowing  :  Articulation/Diction/Bowing

AST 2.2 - Rhythm and Precision  :  Rhythm & Precision

AST 2.3 - Facility  :  Facility

ALT 3 - Musicality: I can perform with musicality.

AST 3.1 - Interpretation and Style  :  Interpretation and Style

AST 3.2 - Phrasing and Dynamics  :  Phrasing and Dynamics

AST 3.3 - Expression and Sensitivity  :  Expression and Sensitivity

ALT 4 - Ensemble Skills: I can demonstrate ensemble skills.

AST 4.1 - Contributing to Rehearsals  :  Contribute to Rehearsals in a Positive Manner

AST 4.2 - Rehearsal Technique  :  Rehearsal Technique

ALT 5 - Listen and Respond: I can listen and respond.

AST 5.1 - Diagnose Performance  :  Diagnose performance of self and others using appropriate musical terminology.

AST 5.2 - Prescribe Solutions for Performance  :  Prescribe solutions for performance issues.

AST 5.3 - Demonstrate Awareness  :  Demonstrate awareness of cross-curricular, cultural and/or historical context and relevance.

ALT 6 - Musical Literacy: I can demonstrate musical literacy.

AST 6.1 - Musical Notation  :  Read, interpret, and perform musical notation.

AST 6.2 - Musical Terminology  :  Demonstrate understanding and proper use of musical terminology, markings, etc.

Behavior Learning Targets

Students will be graded separately on their behavior. These grades will follow the same process. There will be a set of behavior learning targets and assignments will align with one or multiple learning targets. Students will be given one of three letters to determine behavior grade. The three letters are C-Consistently, G-Generally, R-Rarely The Behavior learning targets are as follows:

Manages responsibilities as a student

• Uses class time appropriately

• Prepares for class with necessary materials and is ready to learn.

• Follows directions timely and accurately

• Demonstrates quality work

• Makes safe and appropriate choices

Self-directed learning

• Develops a plan to achieve goals, with teacher support

• Persists with a task over time

• Utilizes a variety of sources to find help

• Advocates for self

Communicates and works effectively within a team or group

• Actively participates in group work.

• Listens respectfully and acknowledges the contributions of others

• Shares ideas clearly

• Contributes to creating a safe learning environment

• Adapts to changes in the group process with a positive attitude

Engages with technology in a safe and responsible manner.

• Practices responsible care and use of technology

• Demonstrates safety online, and follows guidelines when using the internet and while collaborating with others

• Recognizes ownership of information, and how to respect the work of others

• Keeps information private and respects the privacy of others
