Summer 2023 Workshops
The summer workshops are really the best way to learn about the unique and compelling features of the Patterns Curriculum for Physics, Chemistry and Biology. This weeklong summer hands-on learning experience immerses teachers both as students doing Patterns activities and as teachers reflecting on the impact on students. We are able to offer both in-person and virtual workshops for Physics and Chemistry. Biology will only have an in-person option. All in-person workshops will be held at Mountainside High School located at 12500 SW 175th Ave, Beaverton, OR 97007.
Normally there is a charge for the summer workshop, but thanks to the WRAP (Well-Rounded Access Program) grant, we are able to offer our summer virtual and in-person workshops to any Oregon teacher or resident free of charge this summer. There will, however, still be a registration fee for teachers to take the summer workshops if they do not live or teach in Oregon.
Please note there will be two different registration links, one for Oregon teachers and residents and another registration link for out-of-state teachers.
PATTERNS PHYSICS
Physics for the Next Generation (In-person Workshop) - Patterns Physics is the first course in the 3-year Patterns Science sequence. This workshop focuses on three-dimensional (3D) learning through culturally responsive phenomena-based storylines that intertwine the disciplinary core ideas of physics with the scientific and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts as described in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Teachers experience the Patterns Approach of using inquiry and exploration to learn content as well as how to integrate engineering and student-centered learning experiences, such as coding spreadsheets and simulations, into their instructional design. Teachers will learn instructional practices that advance equitable engagement of students as they solve real-world problems and utilize the science practices to understand and think critically about the world around them. Teachers will also learn how to structure inquiry and engineering investigations with multiple designs to foster equitable discourse and collaboration between students. Units 1-3 will be covered in this workshop.
Dates: August 14-18, 2023
Time: 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM.
Registration link for Oregon Teachers and/or Oregon residents. Registration is free
Registration Link for out-of-state teachers. Cost for registration is $500.
Facilitators: Bradford Hill & Matt McCollum
Physics for the Next Generation (Virtual Workshop) - Sessions will meet Monday through Thursday. While the workshop is presented virtually, it is intended for teachers teaching in-person. In several instances this workshop will use modified worksheets and activity structures. It will use simulations and/or at home simple set-ups for data collection for experiments. Units 1-3 will be covered in this workshop. Materials for the workshop will be mailed to your home.
Dates: July 17-20, 2023
Time: 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM.
Registration link for Oregon Teachers and/or Oregon residents. Registration is free
Registration Link for out-of-state teachers. Cost for registration is $425. Supplies included in this cost.
Facilitators: Bradford Hill & Matt McCollum
PATTERNS CHEMISTRY
Chemistry for the Next Generation (In-person Workshop) - Patterns Chemistry is the second course in the 3-year high school Patterns Science sequence. This workshop focuses on three-dimensional (3D) learning through culturally responsive, phenomena-based storylines that intertwine the disciplinary core ideas of chemistry with the scientific and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts as described in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Participants will experience the Patterns Approach of using inquiry and exploration to teach content to students as well as how to integrate classroom discourse into their instructional design including a variety of data discussion methods. Participants will also learn how to include instructional practices that support student scientific writing that advance equitable engagement of students as they grapple with real-world applications in Chemistry. These applications involve social and environmental justice themes and mathematical patterns and trends. Units 1-2 will be covered in this workshop.
Dates: July 31-August 4, 2023
Time: 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM.
Registration Link for Oregon Teachers and/or Oregon residents. Registration is free
Registration Link for out-of-state teachers. Cost for registration is $500.
Facilitators: Kristi Miller & Jomae Sica
Chemistry for the Next Generation (Virtual Workshop) - Sessions will meet Monday - Tuesday, and Thursday - Friday. While the workshop is presented virtually, it is intended for teachers teaching in-person. In several instances this workshop will use modified worksheets and activity structures. It will use simulations and/or at home simple set-ups for data collection for experiments. Units 1-2 will be covered in this workshop. Materials for the workshop will be mailed to your home.
Dates: July 24-25, July 27-28
Time: 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM.

Facilitator: Andrea Leech
PATTERNS BIOLOGY
Biology for the Next Generation (In-person Workshop) - Patterns Biology is the culminating course in the 3-year high school Patterns Science sequence. This workshop focuses on three-dimensional (3D) learning through culturally responsive, phenomena-based storylines that intertwine the disciplinary core ideas of biology with the scientific and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts as described in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Participants will experience the Patterns Approach of using inquiry and exploration to teach content to students as well as how to integrate talk structures and classroom discourse into their instructional design including a variety of data discussion methods. Additionally, participants will learn how to include instructional practices that support student scientific writing that advance equitable engagement of students as they grapple with real-world applications in Biology. These applications involve topics such as social justice themes, implementation of Oregon’s Tribal History/Shared History lessons and more complex mathematical patterns and trends. Units 1-2 will be covered in this workshop.
