NHS Applications Process:
Mid-September - Eligible Juniors and Seniors will receive an email that they have academically qualified to be admitted into NHS. Students need a 3.6 or higher weighted GPA to be eligible. They will need to submit an application showing two of the other four pillars. Their application will highlight their leadership (clubs, sports, jobs, etc they are are involved in and any leadership positions that they have held) as well as any community service that they have provided since they have left middle school. They will have approximately 3 weeks from the time the email is sent out until the application is due.
Since our pillars are Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service, we do ask that the students do what they can in advance of their application to build these before applying. Leadership points are given to any extra or co-curricular activities that the students are involved in with more points granted for longevity. They should try to get in community service whenever they can. In order to obtain the maximum score in the service pillar, we look for an average of 20 hours of service per year (less than the national recommendation of 30 hours per year). If a student does not have this amount, it does not preclude them from being excepted, they will just get a lower score in this pillar and will need to make up for it in other pillars.
Mid-October - Students who are interested in applying for NHS should have submitted their application. Faculty will be surveyed on the students who have applied, giving insight into their leadership in the classroom and their overall character. Faculty Council will meet to review the applications based on a rubric provided by the national organization of which we are charter members.
Late-October - Students will receive letters regarding their acceptance into National Honor Society. Each student who applies will receive a letter letting them know the status of application.
Early to Mid-November - Induction will be held in the BHS auditorium in the evening at 6:30 pm. All students who wish to be a member of NHS will need to be present to be inducted.
There is a charter membership fee. Each year, students need to pay $15 in dues. This fee pays for our continuing membership in the national organization so that we continue to be recognized at the national level. In return, each student does receive a t-shirt that they should wear to events where they volunteer on behalf of NHS.
