The National Science Bowl® is a highly visible, fast paced educational event and academic competition among teams of high school students who compete in a verbal forum to solve technical problems and answer questions in all branches of science and math, somewhat like Jeopardy or Academic Team. The regional and national events encourage student involvement in math and science activities, improve awareness of career options in science and technology, and provide an avenue of enrichment and reward for academic science achievement.
Topics include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Math, Earth/Space Science, and Energy. Students of all grade levels are valued. Freshman often have greater recall of Earth and Space science while students in more advanced academic classes tend to perform better in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Math. Winning science bowl team members recommend participating in the weekly science bowl meetings as often as possible throughout the school year in order to develop a strong familiarity with the rules as well as the types and flow of questions.
Initial selection of 5-person teams will occur in early October with teams finalized in late December/early January. If you are involved in a fall sport, band, etc. and cannot come to practices early in the school year please let me know of your interest in Science Bowl as soon as possible so that I can count you in.
We practice every Thursday after school in room 1013 from 3:10 to 4:15 or so. The regional competition is held at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College on a TBD Saturday in February or March.
The team that wins the regional competition receives an all-expense paid trip to nationals. The National Science Bowl Competition is in Washington D.C. is usually in April.
