I teach with guided inquiry lessons, labs and notes. We will cover the traditional high school chemistry topics, preparing students for all levels of Physics and/or AP Chemistry.
Russo Atoms First Chemistry - we do not have online access to this text, however it will be used mainly as a resource, so leave it at home unless told otherwise.
You will need a scientific calculator for this course - one that handles sine, cosine, tangent and logarithms. Graphing calculators are fine for general class work but will not be allowed during tests or quizzes.
Chemical splash goggles are required for most laboratory activities in this class. If you do not have a pair, you may purchase a pair from your teacher for $4.00. If you prefer to purchase your own elsewhere, be sure the goggles are splash-proof such as the ones found here. Most shop glasses are not splash-proof and are not suited for the chemical laboratory.
You will need to have the spellings and symbols of some basic elements memorized by the time we begin Chapter 4 (You do NOT need to know masses or atomic numbers!). The above link will take you to the ones I will expect you to know.
You will need to have these polyatomic ions (spellings, formulas and charges) memorized by October (Chapter 5). This is absolutely essential to your success throughout most of the year. Your list of assigned polyatomic ions can be found at the bottom of the Common Ions Sheet.
Here you will find the periodic table I gave you as well as a the page of formulas and miscellaneous information on the back of the periodic table.
You will also find a copy of the reference sheet for three ways to solve limiting reactant problems that I will give you when we do chapter 9.
