Information and Procedures for Mrs. Curd’s Third Grade
Reading and Writing
This year there is a shift to more independent reading and writing. Students are moving from learning how to read to reading to learn.
ELA Curriculum
We will be focusing on comprehension, reading longer and reading more complex books. We will read various kinds of Fiction and Nonfiction texts throughout the year. Beavercreek has adopted a new ELA curriculum this year from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt called Into Reading.
Writer’s Workshop
Students will learn the 6 vital traits of good writing, Voice, Ideas, Presentation, Conventions, Organization, Word Choice, and Sentence Fluency. Third graders will be writing many paragraphs this year and working on finding evidence from the text to use in their writing. Skills will be taught during classroom mini lessons and individual conferences.
Science and Social Studies
Your child will have one folder for Science and Social Studies. All material covered for each unit will be found in this folder.
Math: MULTIPLICATION IS KEY!!!!
The district’s math program for 3-5 student’s is also Houghton Mifflin Harcourt called Into Math. This program allows students to work with a concept for multiple days rather than one day. It allows students to explore with numbers and gather a deeper understanding of math. Third grade students are expected to master multiplication facts (0-12). We will be taking timed tests on multiplication facts. Once multiplication facts have been mastered, students will move on to division. Students are expected to practice math facts at home as much as needed. Knowing multiplication facts is essential and we strive for all 3rd graders to have them mastered by the end of the year. However, mid-year mastery is ideal.
Third Grade Reading Guarantee and State Testing
Third graders will be taking state tests in October and April. I know there can be some anxiety around this testing. Please don’t let this stress you or child. This is simply a small glimpse of your child’s progress. The Third Grade Reading Guarantee uses scores from either MAP, State Test, or both to determine if a child is on track for success in third grade.
Chromebooks
We use chromebooks on a daily basis and are part of our daily curriculum. Student’s chromebooks will remain at school, unless there is homework assigned, so they are charged and ready to go for the day.
Homework
Your child should be able to complete most of the homework on his/her own, but your involvement is still needed to check completeness, quality, and correctness.
· Math: practice math facts and look over any math worksheets
· Check and sign daily planner for assignments, or notes.
· Reading: at least 20 minutes a day.
Daily Assignment Book (Agenda)
Each 3rd grade student will be supplied with an agenda. Students will write in their agendas daily. Please read their agenda daily so you are updated on special dates and assignments that need to be completed. Please sign the agenda book each night. The message section is an excellent way to communicate with me!!
Take Home Folder
Your child will have an Orange Take Home Folder. The folder will be taken home each night and needs to be brought back to school the next day. It is very important because many of your child’s assignments and information will be found in this folder. Please check the folder each night. If you are sending information back to school, remind your child to check the folder in the morning and give me any important papers. This folder is a great tool to help your child stay organized throughout the year.
Snack/Water Bottles
Students may bring a snack for our afternoon recess. If your child brings a water bottle to school please send them with any plastic reusable bottle. The metal ones create a distraction throughout the day when they fall off their desks and make a terribly loud noise.
Dry Erase Markers
The dry erase markers tend to run out very quickly. Please ask your child every so often if he or she needs new markers. Any additional donations of markers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
Lunch/Recess: 11:30-12:10
Grades
Students will receive letter grades along with skills and effort checklists. Both are equally important.
A 100%-90%
B 89%-80%
C 79% - 70%
D 69% - 60%
F 59% and below
