Mr. Sean Hurley

Jacob Coy Choral Director

6th Grade Choir - 7th Grade Choir - Una Voce

Unaccompanied Minors Director

6th Grade Combined Show Choir Director "New Horizons"

Born in Bethesda, Maryland, Sean Hurley was an Air Force brat, who eventually grew up in Beavercreek, Ohio. Sean grew up with his parents and two siblings, who were all connected to music through the Beavercreek Music Program. Sean participated in both choir and band throughout his schooling. Shaped by his music teachers, Sean decided to study music at Miami University where he earned his Bachelor of Music in Music Education as well as his Master's in Music Education. While attending Miami, Sean met his wife Heather and have now joined the ranks of other Miami Mergers, a growing population of Miamians who end up married. Sean and Heather have a five year old daughter named Braelynn and a three year old son named Carrick, who keeps things at home very interesting and makes him continually grateful he can sing nursery rhymes.

Sean started his professional career with Brookville Local Schools and after 5 years, returned to his hometown of Beavercreek to become the Jacob Coy Middle School Choral Director. At Beavercreek, Sean has created 3 new ensembles, a select 8th grade choir, Una Voce, and a contemporary pop a cappella group, Unaccompanied Minors, and the 6th grade combined school show choir, New Horizons. In his 13 year career, Sean has taught everything from choir, musicals, general music, music technology, piano, band, and theater. In January of 2018, Sean received the 2018 Springfield Symphony's Music Educator of the Year. Some of Sean’s greatest achievements over his career are being the music director of the “All State Show Choir” funded by the Ohio Department of Transportation, which received a Grammy for its music video and public outreach, partnering his choir with The Ohio State University College of Optometry in 2017 for a parody promotional music video based on "Hamilton", having his choir, Una Voce, selected to perform at the Ohio Music Educators Association Professional Conference in Columbus, Ohio, being the guest conductor for multiple honors choirs around Ohio, judging the “Trills and Thrills” competitions around the area, and earning multiple ratings of I at OMEA Large Group Contests. Sean believes that choir has the ability to develop confidence, compassion, empathy, focus, and cultural understanding in anyone who takes the time to truly accept song in their heart. It is his goal that every ensemble he directs leaves an impact on every listener and helps to build a larger community of understanding and unification.

Mr. Hurley is no stranger to the stage as he has directed numerous musicals along with participating in many stage productions as a performer. Mr. Hurley finds it necessary to continue to perform himself so he may practice what he teaches. He finds the constant real first hand experience gives him the ability to truly understand what his students go through when they step on stage and this makes his teaching more effective.
