Hello 5th Grade Families!
My name is Mr. Pobst, and I am so excited to be your fifth-grade Math and Social Studies teacher this year! This will be my sixth year teaching and my second year at Parkwood.
I am originally from the small town of Oran, Missouri and taught in multiple districts in Southeast Missouri starting in 2019 before coming to Parkwood last year. I have previously taught 4th, 3rd, and 2nd grade in the last five years. I am so excited to be in 5th grade, especially having many students I had the privilege of teaching last year in 4th!
I believe that all students should feel safe in my classroom, learn how to be the next generation of citizens and leaders, and leave my classroom as young scholars. I look forward to working with each student and their families throughout the school year to achieve these goals!

Math Expectations for Fifth Grade
Classwork Policy: Classwork will be due at the end of the class period. Classwork will be graded on accuracy.
Test and Quiz Policy: Tests and Quizzes may only be taken in school and should NOT be “made up” at home if a student is absent. Students will be given time to complete these once they return to school.
Homework Policy: Homework will not be assigned, however students may need to complete classwork at home due to absence or other circumstances. It is expected to be complete, done to the best of the student's ability, neat, and on time based on the number of days absent.
Recess will not be a time to complete classwork or homework. I believe students need to be outside (or in the event of indoor recess, the ability to socialize and have a mental break) as much as possible and that recess is essential to their ability to focus and learn in the classroom.
5-a-Day Math- These are assigned daily starting on Mondays and students work on them each day at the beginning of class. We will review and go over the answers every day. Students should ask questions and correct their papers to prepare for the quizzes each Friday, which will go over the concepts worked on throughout the week.
HMH Into Math (Ed) Classwork Assignments- Students will have a daily math assignment to work on in Ed, which is our online component of our math curriculum. Students will be given time to complete it during the Math period but it may also be completed at home if students do not complete it in class.
Class Participation/Collaboration- This year, students will be collaborating in groups to foster critical thinking skills during math lessons following the Building Thinking Classrooms model. I will give weekly grades based on their ability to collaborate and participate in lessons. More information on this style of learning will be provided in the flier and on our website.
Math Assessments- Students will be given math assessments at the end of each module. We will go over a study guide together the day before assessments that may be taken home to look over. Students will be given the opportunity to make test corrections for half-credit based on their first test score.
IXL- Students will be assigned a weekly skills plan in IXL. Each week they will practice Math topics covered that week. There will be 5-7 skill sets weekly and students must attain an 80% in each skill to receive the points for the week. Each skill will be worth 5 points; with each week totalling up to 35 points.
Time will be provided during I & E twice a week and during Math class daily in order to minimize the need to complete this outside of class, however this can also be completed at home. I will be taking grades on these weekly, however, students will have until the end of each quarter to complete past week’s skills sets. It is the responsibility of the student to show me ALL late work in order to receive their points.
Behavior- Students will be given multiple chances to correct any behavior in my classroom, however there may be times that I ask students to write sentences to reflect on their choices. I ask that these sentences be signed and returned to me when given out. Failure to return these will result in losing 5 minutes of recess (I will never take more than 5 minutes per day). I will never assign more than ten sentences at a time.
Social Studies:
Social Studies will be taught for at least 30 minutes daily.
Concepts taught are based on the Ohio Social Studies Standards:
History
Geography
Government
Economics
Social Studies class will include hands-on activities, reading the content for understanding, and writing to grade level expectations.
We will use the Gallopade Social Studies curriculum as our primary source of lessons and activities.
Your child may have social studies classwork during the week. This should get done in class but if it is not for any reason it may need to be completed at home.
Social Studies concepts may be assessed at any time after they have been taught, even if we have moved on from that unit.
