At the beginning of every school year, I always get asked why grades behave the way they do in the HAC. A big piece of this is the difference between process and product points. See below for a description of what is process and what is product.
Process (15% of grade): Process points will be earned through homework, journals, writing assignments, reading checks, etc. Basically anything that contributes to the process of learning a concept is considered process points.
Product (85% of grade): Product points are earned through assessments, projects, culminating activities, etc. Product points should reflect how well a student has learned the concepts being assessed. These activities are the product of their learning and assess whether students can accurately demonstrate their understanding of the content.
**These percentages are set by the Jackson Local School District**
LATE/ABSENT WORK
In most instances, the following policy will apply to late work:
For a PROCESS grade, if the assignment is turned in late the next day, students will receive ½ credit. After that, the grade will remain a zero
For PRODUCT grades, if the assignment is not turned in on time, it will result in the loss of 10% (or one letter grade) for each day that it is late
For example, if you have an assignment due on Wednesday and you don't turn it in until Friday, then you will lose 20% of your total grade.
If you are absent, you are responsible for any work you miss. You typically have as many days to complete the work as you were absent. However, if you are absent on a test day and you are aware of it ahead of time, please be prepared to take the test immediately upon your return to school.
**These policies are subject to change based on the nature of the school year. Any changes will be communicated to you from me in an email**
