Along with Year 5, the Year 6 children learnt how to save lives! We learnt how to perform CPR; what to do if someone is choking; and how to put somebody in to the recovery position.

All sessions were run by trained volunteers from the local community.

Year six had an incredibly informative trip to the Bristol Life Skills centre. They took part in lots of activities to equip them with important knowledge and life skills that they will need as they become increasingly independent: road safety, safety near train lines, how to use a payphone, how to shop in a supermarket (including checking they haven’t been short-changed) and how to be safe with electronics. Year six were also very responsible when they encountered various emergency situations involving fire, gas leaks, medical emergencies and crime. They learnt about how to keep themselves and those around them safe and even practised making emergency service calls to some very familiar voices… We all left the centre feeling much more knowledgeable and ready for any challenges that could come our way.

To ‘launch’ our first topic in year six (The Amazing Americas), we enjoyed our very own Mayan hot chocolates. The Mayans believed that cacao was a gift from the gods and it was reserved as a treat for royalty and noblemen/women. They used spices to flavour their hot chocolate and, because it was made from cacao, it was more savoury than the drink that we are used to. Year six were allowed to choose from a selection of spices to supplement their hot chocolates: paprika, cinnamon and chilli powder. Whilst some of us thoroughly enjoyed our first taste of ‘liquid gold’, others weren’t so sure!

Each class gathered for an inspiring talk from a director at Apollo Technology, who shared insights about various roles in STEM. He illustrated how diverse careers in STEM can be, from software developers to IT engineers. The children were inspired as they heard about famous pioneers such as Steve Jobs - their imaginations ignited with the possibility of pursuing a career in STEM!

The Egg Theatre's Wonderfund meant all children were able to benefit from a free trip to watch a performance of Bird Boy. A non-verbal piece about belonging and acceptance.

Through dance, metaphor and shadow puppetry, children experienced one man's interpretation of what it means to find out who you really are.

24.1.25

The whole school had an opportunity to be off timetable for part of the day. Some watched a pantomime and Year 6 had the chance to take part in a murder mystery!
