Edition 33

Friday 14th June 2024

I am delighted to report to parents that since my last blog, Beacon Academy’s building work has progressed at quite a pace. (Please see photo below).

Anybody driving past can’t fail to notice the enormous amount of earth that has been moved and the fence across the school field.

These are exciting times, seeing the foundations being laid for our state-of-the-art building.

Access to the site is being created from Humberston Road, with temporary traffic signals in place. This may be leading to slight delays for some parents and the community, however this is temporary and will mean the contractors’ entrance will lead to  minimal disruption to the school and our local neighbours.

The students normal day is unaffected.

We will be making the most of having experts on construction and various trades on site in terms of careers as part of our personal development programme.

A time lapse camera has now been installed and is recording the historic, once-in-a generation build.

The majority of Year 11 GCSE students will leave the school today following the final major exam; Science (Physics Paper 2) at 2:15pm.

I would like to thank all the students for their exemplary conduct around the Academy throughout the exams. They have shown the utmost respect for those taking their GCSEs, whose own conduct has been exemplary.

A special thanks to our Beacon staff team. The Academy has been open every Saturday morning since 2nd March and every day during recent holidays. We have also been open on  Sundays ahead of the 2 Monday morning GCSE Mathematics exam(s).

I am very proud to work alongside such dedicated staff who have given Beacon students the best exam preparation possible.

I would also like to thank the children for attending the intervention sessions and parents for their support - this will make a huge difference to their GCSE outcomes.

Three GCSEs remain next week. On Monday, it’s the final Statistics (Paper 2) at 1pm, while on Tuesday there is Design and Technology at 9am and the Polish (written paper) at 1pm.

We are looking forward to Year 11’s final celebration next Thursday when it is their prom, being held in ‘The Barn’ at Healing Manor.

Year 10 parents / carers should be aware that mock exams start on Tuesday (18th) through to Monday 24th. Our Head of Year 10; Miss Imrie will be sending out a schedule separately.

A total of 54 students from Years 8, 9 and 10 enjoyed a three-day residential at PGL Newby Wiske Hall Adventure Centre near Northallerton.

Parents / carers followed their exciting activities on our Facebook page before they returned on Wednesday.

Thank you to Mr Leak and the staff team for giving up their time and supporting the residential. The conduct of the students was impeccable and they were a credit to themselves and the school. It has been a pleasure to hear about the students’ fantastic experiences.

During the week commencing 24th June, we have rewards trips to Flamingo Land in North Yorkshire and Gravity Trampoline Park in Hull. Whilst Mr Jackson is also planning a Year 8 reward trip to Papas on Cleethorpes Pier for fish and chips.

On Thursday 27th June, Mr Hand is taking our Religious Studies’ students to see a production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ in Hull, another exciting experience for our students.

Year 10 Performing Arts students held their musical showcase as part of their GCSE coursework in Performing Arts, it was lovely to see so many parents attending. I’m sure they will agree they saw some fantastic performances from their talented children.

Also involved were those studying GCSE Theatre Studies, the Academy being the only one in North East Lincolnshire to offer the course. The students provided the lighting, staging and sound recording for the event.

Training partners CATCH came into Year 7’s assembly and hosted drop down sessions for our Year 7 throughout the day. The day gave the children an insight into  potential engineering apprenticeships & careers in the future.

The second Year 7 parents evening this year was held last night and it was great to see so many parents / carers there. I would like to thank them for the lovely feedback about the school.

Last Thursday, a special lunchtime Pride event took place and it was terrific to see so many students support it. Thank you for the donations that were received.

Finally, as we say farewell to our Year 11 we are already looking ahead.

150 Year 6 students – we remain heavily oversubscribed and have 53 on a waiting list - will be attending Beacon for their induction days on 4th and 5th July ahead of them starting here in September 2024.

I can also announce the Year 6 Open Evening for admission in September 2025 – when we will move into our new building – will take place on Wednesday, 11th September. I will be presenting at 5pm, 6pm and 7pm.

Thank you for reading the blog, the next will be published on Friday, 28th June.
