“Some people say that Samish Island is shaped like a great fish, its open mouth head upstream, and its great tail stretched to the west.” Says Fred Miller in his Samish Island a History.
As you can see in the picture, Samish Island is a bit far from... well, everywhere but the beach. Samish island is approximately 3.56 miles (5.6 kilometers) long. So VERY small. The closest store is in Edison, approximately 10 minutes away. That means that islanders must stock up on groceries
There may be no sidewalk, but you can find pedestrians and their dogs on and off the road enjoying the fresh air nearly every day of the week! Also, beach walking is an option. So enjoy!
"What are we?" we bet you're asking by now, "A peninsula? An island? Two islands?" Well, geographically speaking, we are a peninsula. According to the vibe, we are an island, according to Steve Hopley, islanders have what he calls 'Island Mentality' meaning that we are more of a community than people in big cities are. Historically speaking, we were two islands. All in all, you can choose what you call us.
