- Imagine holding and carrying the instrument.
- Do you like the idea of practicing this instrument?
- Think you'll be getting braces? Don't let that affect your decision. Lots of kids play band instruments with braces - it takes some getting used to but is not a reason not to play an instrument.
- Don't pick an instrument just because your best friend did! Pick your own favorite. You will see your friends in band no matter what instrument they play.
- If you would like more detailed ideas for band instruments, such as what kind of facial structure works best for an instrument, click here. But please take it with a BIG grain of salt - we have seen again and again, if a student WANTS to play an instrument, the motivation is there, and it will work regardless of facial structure/body size.

1. Motivation
Students will be motivated if they choose an instrument they like!
2. Good Instruments
Get an instrument that works well! (rentals are always great and are economical, used instruments in good repair are great.
New instruments are good ONLY if a good brand! Stay AWAY from cheap Amazon instruments - more information about this in Step 3
3. Practice
Students who practice succeed!
Students should try and practice every day in order to build up muscles and muscle memory.
The better you play, the more fun it is to practice!
The more you practice, the better you get.
The better you get, the better you play.
And on and on and on!!
