Getting an Instrument

and Accessories
How do I get an instrument?
See below for different ways to get an instrument. Most band students choose to rent an instrument to start. We recommend this because it is a fairly inexpensive and low-risk way to get started.
For families experiencing financial hardship, we have a limited number of instruments available to borrow from the school. Please contact Mrs. Battenberg if you need to go this route.
There is also an organization called The Coda Project that provides intruments to families in need. Families can apply online.
Do I need to purchase anything else?
Most band instruments have a few required accessories that go along with the instrument. If you are renting, the stores know exactly what accessories should be included for BDMS. Click here for a list of band accessories.
Best choice for most students
Instruments are high quality
Most repairs are free
If the student changes his/her mind, instruments can be switched out
BDUSD works with Ward-Brodt Music and White House of Music, both of whom deliver directly to the school
Quality new or used instruments are more cost effective over the long run
Former students are a great source for used instruments
Do NOT buy instruments off Amazon. They are low quality and do not stand up to student use
Click here for some more information on buying used band instruments
This option is available for one band instrument: the baritone (also called euphonium)
Great! Instruments that have sat for a while will probably need some maintenance. All area music stores will give free estimates to bring old instruments back into playing condition.
Don't forget to get the accessories!
Note: if your student wants to be in band but cost is an issue, please contact one of the band teachers. We have a limited number of school instruments available in the band program for families in need.
