Middle School is a time for students to try out different activities to see what their passion is. That makes it the perfect time to start a new instrument!
Both Band and Orchestra are regular, scheduled classes that meet each day in middle school. There is no need for early morning or after school transportation.
Band and Orchestra do not conflict with sports, clubs, or other school activities
Students have 3 required concerts in the evening throughout the school year (these are not scheduled during school sporting events)
Band, Orchestra, and Chorus all meet at the same time, so it is possible for students to be in 2 music classes by attending them every other day.
Rental instruments are quite affordable, and are usually the best option for beginners because the instruments are of high quality, and repairs are free.
BDMS does have a limited number of instruments available for students who would like to start an instrument, but cannot afford a rental. Please contact one of the music teachers for more information and to see what instruments are available.
Choose Band/Orchestra for your student when filling out the 6th Grade Music Choice form in February. (If you did not, or can't remember, simply contact a middle school teacher to let them know your student is interested in an instrument).
Attend one of our Instrument Tryout and Rental times. This is an open house style event where your student will:
Select an instrument with the guidance of the music teachers
Register for Summer Music Lessons
The music stores Ward Brodt Music and White House of Music will have a display and forms for parents who wish to set up instrument rental
Attend the Summer Music Lessons. Your student will be with only their instrument group and will learn to put together and make a sound on their instrument, and to read and play several notes and rhythms. This will put him/her in a great position to succeed once school starts and the band and orchestra meet with all the instruments combined together.
