The Drawing course focuses on building fundamental and intermediate drawing skills. Students will learn basic techniques such as shading, controlling tones, composition and drawing methods. Additionally, we learn how to see with an artists eye and capture what we see and illustrate to best of our capabilities. Other fundamentals will be taught such as understanding and uses for different drawing tools, creating gray scales, various paper surfaces for effect, different techniques for creating value, reductive drawing, and many other techniques. Unlike alot of art classes, we will draw majority from life. This is viewed as the best way to learn drawing.
Most of the assignments can be completing with some very basic art materials. The syllabus includes a list of the recommended materials for this class.
We will begin by learning about how to use the Canvas platform. Second we will be creating a "ALL About Me" worksheet. This will allow you to get the opportunity to show off your skills and understand how the class will function. It will also allow you to explore and ask unique questions.
If at any point throughout the course you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me through canvas or email.
Recommended Materials for the Class:
Pencils of different hardness. Include at least the following: 2H, 2B, 4B ,6B and 9B. You are welcome to buy others if you want to.
A set of water color paints (the Crayola ones are good enough for this class but I would not recommend them for advanced art courses).
Drawing paper- I have available if needed.
Drawing/Sketch pad with at least 25 or more pages.
A box of color pencils. It must at least include the primary and secondary colors, plus black and white. Prismacolor pencils are very nice but not required. Most art stores sell individual pencils so you can replace only what you need. If you feel these are too pricy, I recommend the Crayola brand color pencils, specially the water color pencils. Those are almost as good as the professional brands. Stay away from generic brands. They are usually not as good.
Charcoal sticks: Soft, medium and hard
Paper stumps and tortillions (blending paper rolls)
Gum, kneaded erasers
Goals:
Students can draw from observation
Students can identify pattern, ornamentation and decoration
Students can develop created space
Understand relationship with a sketch and final composition
Students can produce self portraits
Students can incorporate collaboration in Art
Students will understand effect from paper selection in art techniques
Students will create a piece of art depicting one idea or selected art style
Students will create drawings from memory
Students will describe, in writing, the purpose of the work of art
Students will provide feedback on the piece of art to another student
Students will revise their work based on the feedback provided
The course will include a final exam where you will apply everything that you have learned about art-making. The purpose of this test is to demonstrate improvement and knowledge gained from course. It is also important that you follow directions and do not cheat with your work, otherwise you will be tricking yourself into a high grade that will be meaningless.
