Families,

Let's face it.  Math is not taught the same way we learned years ago.  This shift in instruction can make homework time a challenge.  Have no fear, we have created tutorial videos just for you.  Students are taught using a variety of strategies starting with the base ten strategy.  We do not want students to only use the base ten strategy, but it is a great place to start as it provides a visual.  Traditionally, students struggle the most with the open number line strategy as they have a difficult time keeping their work neat and organized.  Once all strategies have been taught, we encourage students to use partial sums or open number line strategies rather than base ten.

Please do not teach your student the standard algorithm as they will not be able to use this strategy in class until the end of third grade.  Teaching this strategy before place value strategies are mastered can cause confusion.

We hope you find these videos helpful. If you still have questions, or just need a little clarification, after viewing these videos please feel free to reach out to your student's teacher for clarification.

Thank you for your continued support!
