NEW for the 25-26 school year
Brunswick County Schools will implement Great Minds Arts & Letters ELA curriculum for grade 6-8. This curriculum requires all students to read class novels as homework. Your child should always have at least one novel assigned to them as well as self-selected novels for independent reading. Please reach out to your child's ELA teacher for assistance.
As a parent I have concerns about what my child is reading. What do I do?
Parents and guardians are some of the most important stakeholders when it comes to educating children. Parents absolutely have the right to preview, read, and disagree or remove materials they do not want their child subjected to. However, there are processes and policies in place if a parent wishes to alter or remove instructional materials. If you are on the fence about what your child reads or question why teachers encourage reading so much I kindly recommend you read the following articles:

Destiny Discover is the online catalog of print books available in our media center. Students can search by genre, author, or keywords to find new titles to take home.

CGMS students learn the Notice & Note signposts in sixth grade then continue to use these reading strategies through eighth grade. All of our ELA teachers are trained on the fiction and nonfiction signposts. The Social Studies and science teachers also implement the nonfiction signposts in their classrooms so students can see the reading strategies used across content areas.
