As much as I love to joke with students that my job is to annoy them I do take my role as a literacy coach seriously. I joined the Cedar Grove family in 2013 as a seventh grade ELA teacher. After seven years teaching seventh grade and two years teaching eighth grade I became the school literacy coach in 2021.
My goal is to get students reading. Not just pretend to read but actually read. Then the goal is to get our students to enjoy reading. There is nothing more exciting than witnessing that lightbulb moment when a student realizes reading can be enjoyable. We just have to find the right book that grabs their interest.
I spend about 50% of my time working directly with teachers (all teachers - not just ELA!) and the other 50% directly with students. My favorite part of teaching is a novel study or class visit to the media center. You'll find me hanging around the historical fiction section of the library.
All students are expected to have at least 2 novels on them at all times. Students are more than welcome to have nonfiction books in addition to the 2 novels.
Any teacher, regardless of content area, can use independent reading as a class activity. Research has also shown time and time again that exposure to books is a vital part of turning students into readers. More time and access to high interest books yields more reading.
But what if my student doesn't like to read? They don't like reading . . . yet. It is our job to find their joy in reading. Think about food. How often has a person said they don't like xyz food until they try it prepared a certain way? It might take a couple tries but interests can change and grow.
