~ 4th/5th Grade AIG Math ~ 4th Grade Homeroom/Science/Social Studies ~
Brunswick County employs I-Ready Math for its core Math curriculum. In addition to I-Ready, I implement above-grade-level standards and skills whenever possible, and grade level content is presented with a focus on problem-solving and real-life connections. AIG math students receive enrichment through meaningful discourse, critiquing the reasoning of others, collaborating on challenging tasks, extending their learning with competitions, centers, and learning games that foster strategic thinking, and through the celebration of various and new strategies to think flexibly about numbers.
In Science, I use Discovery Education and Mystery Science as foundations for content, particularly Mystery Science, which regularly works in investigations and experiments. In addition, AIG students at Lincoln extend their learning about organism adaptations, systems, and structures through the study and observation of whatever living things I am able to bring in. We started this year with a Chinese Mantis, and we currently have a diverse set of plants, four treefrogs, and crickets (frog food). This year's students will finish the year with a study on plant propagation and how different variables impact root growth.
The fourth grade Social Studies curriculum is varied in its content, but there is a continued thread to how each topic we cover plays or played a role in North Carolina's development. We cover Geography, Resources, Industry, European Exploration, Settlements and Colonial America, Economic Systems, Diversity and Cultural Differences as a cornerstone of America, and when time permits, we extend with analysis of primary and secondary sources to determine their reliability.
Brunswick County employs Wit & Wisdom as its core ELA curriculum. Please visit Mrs. Kern's site for more information about ELA!
