SIOP
The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) is a research-based instructional framework designed to make grade-level content both accessible and engaging for English language learners (ELLs) while simultaneously developing their academic language skills. By integrating language objectives with content instruction, the SIOP model helps bridge the gap between language acquisition and content mastery. It emphasizes clear instruction, purposeful interaction, and scaffolding strategies that support students at varying levels of English proficiency. Although originally developed for ELLs, the SIOP model’s principles — such as explicit language goals, interactive learning, and differentiated support benefit all students by promoting deeper understanding, active participation, and equitable learning opportunities.
