MlS IN BRUNSWICK COUNTY SCHOOLS

The ESL program provides English language instruction for students (pull-out, inclusion, or consultative). Students are tested annually as mandated by Federal Law. It is important that ELL students receive the same academic opportunities as students who are proficient in English.

Students of Limited English Proficiency have modified instruction and assessments geared to meet their needs. Brunswick County is committed to the success of all students.

As of 2008-09 school year the WIDA ACCESS Placement Test, also referenced as the WIDA SCREENER, is administered to all initially enrolled language minority students.  This test functions as a screener that is used for the initial assessment and English as a Second Language (ESL) program placement of students who are identified as limited English proficient (LEP).  The annual test, ACCESS for ELLs (Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners), is designed to satisfy Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirements for Title III.

At Brunswick County Schools, we are committed to providing an inclusive and equitable education for all students, including those who are learning English as a second language. Our dedication to academic excellence led us to implement the SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) framework across our district.

SIOP is not just an approach; it's a promise to ensure every student thrives in a supportive and enriching environment. Through SIOP, we tailor our teaching methods to make content comprehensible and engaging for English language learners. Our passionate educators have undergone specialized training to implement SIOP's research-based strategies effectively.

With SIOP, we foster a classroom atmosphere that encourages active participation, language development, and critical thinking. By incorporating visual aids, hands-on activities, and collaborative projects, we empower students to excel academically while embracing their diverse backgrounds.

Whether you're a student, parent, or educator, this page serves as a resource hub for understanding how SIOP enhances language acquisition and academic achievement. "SIOP isn't just about teaching English; it's about empowering students with the language of opportunity."
