This course concentrates on developing reading, writing, and critical thinking skills through an intensive study of literary types and appropriate oral and written responses. Students will work daily with grammar, mechanics, vocabulary, and usage. The course curriculum is covered with standards using literary, informational texts, TV, and movie clips. Each unit consists of a variety of inside and outside class assignments, readings, quizzes, and summative assessments (tests, projects, and/or essays).
Texts
Possible whole texts and text excerpts can include but are not limited to Beowulf, Grendel, Frankenstein, The Canterbury Tales, Hamlet, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Glass Castle, Picture of Dorian Gray, Unwind, a selection of science fiction/dystopian short stories, related news articles, as well as excerpts of film adaptations of the above texts.
