Puberty Curriculum Overview
Growing up can be a challenging time for children, and we want to provide clear, factual, and age-appropriate information to help them navigate these changes. Our Puberty Education Curriculum is designed to provide students with essential knowledge about the physical, emotional, and social changes they experience during puberty.
As part of the North Carolina Healthful Living curriculum, this instruction is led by the Physical Education Teacher, School Nurse, and School Counselors. Our elementary program is Opt-In only, meaning that students will only participate with written parental permission. Our middle school 6th grade is opt-out.
Students will watch a video covering five key topics:
What Is Puberty? – Overview of puberty, endocrine system, hormones, and common changes in boys and girls (body hair, body odor, hygiene).
Girls and Puberty – Female reproductive anatomy, hormonal changes, ovulation, and emotional changes.
Boys and Puberty – Male reproductive anatomy, hormonal changes, spermatogenesis, hygiene, and emotional changes.
New Emotions, New Feelings – How hormones impact emotions and social changes, including independence, friendships, and romantic feelings.
BCS does not cover the topics of HIV and AIDS in the Puberty Lessons as listed in this curriculum.
Boys and girls will be separated for viewing and discussion. Students may receive printed materials to reinforce their learning, and parents are encouraged to review these materials at home.
We encourage parents to review the materials before making a decision. You can:

If you would like to previe the videos or materials in person, please contact your student's teacher to schedule a time.
Since this is an Opt-In program, your child must have a signed the permission slip to participate. If we do not receive a signed form, they will not take part in the lessons. Your school may require a paper permission slip instead of the online for here.

The lesson schedule will be shared with a letter that will be sent home with your student.
