BMS Band
  • Each year, our 7th and 8th grade students have the opportunity to participate in an exciting event called OMEA Solo & Ensemble.

  • This event is hosted by our state professional organization called the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA).

  • Students can choose to play a solo (by themselves) or an ensemble (a small group of students).

  • Typically in December, your band directors will start having these conversations with students about if they'd like to participate - then they'll decide if they'd like to do a solo, an ensemble, or both!

  • To celebrate, we invite all students who participate to a pizza & ice cream party during lunch/pride time that we hold after solo & ensemble!

  • Throughout December, January and February, your band directors will help your child select the music they'd like to play at solo & ensemble.  Your child will then practice this music up until the date of their performance(s)!

      • Soloists must take private lessons and arrange for an accompanist to perform with them (Mr. Allen can help find the accompanist.  Most accompanists charge $40 total for their rehearsal and performance.

      • Ensembles typically practice together during PRIDE time and/or during class when possible!

  • In April, solo & ensemble is held at Stanton Middle School (1175 Hudson Road, Kent, OH 44240).

  • Students will play in front of their families, friends, and one judge who will provide comments and an overall rating.  I (one) is the highest rating and V (five) is the lowest rating.

  • Students then receive/purchase medals if they receive a I (superior) or II (excellent) rating!

This is an experience that students can tangibly see their hard work paying off!
We hope you'll consider supporting your child in this great opportunity!
