Mrs. Shivers

Since 2001, I have called Buncombe County Schools home.  My career path with Buncombe County Schools has included being a Teacher Assistant, a  Classroom Teacher and a Title I Reading Specialist.  I received a Bachelor of Elementary Education degree from The University of Akron and a Master of Arts/Reading Education degree from Appalachian State University.  I  have maintained a  National Board certification in Early and Middle Childhood/Literacy  since 2009 and in 2021 had the honor of being recognized as Teacher of the Year at Black Mountain Elementary School.  

Black Mountain has been my home since relocating here over 20 years ago with my husband,son and daughter.   I enjoy reading, taking walks with our dog, hiking, watching movies and spending time with family and grandchildren.

Teaching reading to students has been my passion throughout my teaching career and I am excited to continue to grow and learn in this field on my students’ behalf.   I believe all students can learn and deserve the opportunity to become educated through different modalities and experiences.

I use Google Classroom, Buncombe County School email, Dojo messenger and school phone messages as ways to communicate with families and students.  Please reach out to me if you have questions or concerns.  I look forward to a wonderful year with all students and families!
