Some colleges (not all) require students to provide a letter of recommendation with their college application. A letter of recommendation is one tool that helps colleges decide if the student being considered for admission is a worthwhile student to accept and will be a valuable community member of their college campus. Teachers, school counselors, work supervisors, coaches, pastors, or mentors are all good candidates for your college recommender. Please consider the following etiquette when asking for a letter of recommendation:
Only ask teachers/adults who can speak positively of your character, performance in class, and potential for the future.
Ask permission before you send resume.
Give as much detail about yourself as possible by providing a resume to your recommender.
Give recommender 2-4 weeks to complete Letter of Recommendation. Recommenders are aware of college deadlines and will submit before deadline.
After letter is provided, write an appreciation note or give small gift as a token of your gratitude.
Once your recommender has confirmed that he/she will write a letter of recommendation for you, you must add them as a recommender in CommonApp.
