Block Schedule
Our students have a rotation of 5 different block classes (art, music, PE, media, Friends and Feelings, technology). A calendar can be found in students’ Take It Everywhere Binder (TIE Binder). The calendar will list students’ block schedule.
Switching Classes
All 5th graders are on one of two teams. The teacher teams are:
Mrs. Barnhouse (ELA) and Mrs. McCall (Math) Science and Social Studies in homeroom
Mrs. McMinn (Math), Mrs. Tison (ELA), and Ms. Harvin (Science and Social Studies)
Attendance
Attendance is VERY important! Please get your child to school on time (before 7:55 AM). Free breakfast is available each morning for everyone. Students can come to the classroom starting at 7:30.
If your child misses a school day, it is school policy that you send a note to explain his/her absence. You are welcome to send an email in place of a written note. Otherwise, the absence will be counted as unexcused. When a student is absent, it is their responsibility to make up any missed work. There is a system in place for this in the classroom.
Take It Everywhere Binder (TIE Binder)
Every night, your child will bring home their Take It Everywhere Binder. In the binder there is a calendar to keep track of the schedule for block and school events. Please check to know what is going on at school and to know what your child is learning. There should also be a list of any missing assignments your child needs to work on. Your child will record their grades regularly and we ask that you review this with them and sign. You can use the binder as a place to put notes or other things that need to be turned in to the teacher. As a reminder, all dismissal changes must be sent in writing, by 9:00 AM. Please do not email after 9 AM and expect that we will see it before dismissal.
On Friday, a folder will come home, called the Friday Folder. This folder will contain all school communication and paperwork from the week, as well as the work that your child has completed. This is an important folder to check and sign that you have seen each week. Please make sure that this folder is returned to school.
Grading Policy
Grades represent a combination of student proficiency and effort. All assignments build toward a grade, but not all assignments will be included in class grade calculations.
Late work will be accepted with no penalty until the date clearly stated for the end of the 9-week grading period.
Missing assignments will receive a grade of 0, but no submitted work will receive less than a 50.
Corrections will be accepted for all tests or quizzes that are not open-book or open-note. Corrections must be turned back in to receive credit. Corrections will receive half credit. No corrections will be accepted for assignments that could have had help or resources on the first try.
Homework
Students will have a reading goal for each quarter. Students will record their completed books in their TIE binder. These sheets will be checked throughout the quarter to make sure everyone is on track to meet their goal. Students will also have math homework each week. Problems will be sent home on Monday and are due on Friday. Homework will be graded based on effort and completion. Students will also have science vocabulary cards in their TIE binder. Students should also take home their science journals to study, especially before tests.
Conferences
Conferences can be scheduled at any time by contacting the homeroom teacher. We will also have conferences with everyone in the fall.
PBIS and Social-Emotional Learning
Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) is the framework for behavior used throughout our school. There are school-wide expectations that correspond with the acronym RISE. RISE stands for respect, integrity, self-control, and effort. We also teach social-emotional skills to help students meet these expectations.
We will continue with Morning Meetings daily for all students. We will be using a program called Character Strong. Each month we will focus on a different character trait. Information will be sent home each month about our focus.
In 5th grade, we reward positive behavior. Students can earn “brag boxes” individually or class compliments as a class. We will offer frequent rewards for this behavior in the form of special events, activities, and privileges. Students will receive consequences for poor choices or behavior. You will be contacted by email or phone call for serious or repeated problems with behavior.
Snacks and Food
Fairview Elementary is no longer a nut-free school and you may send food with nut products this year. You are welcome to send store-bought treats for your child’s birthday. It is always a good idea to let your child’s teacher know when you plan to do this.
There is not a designated snack time in our 5th grade schedule. Students are welcome to bring in a healthy snack to eat while they are working. Please do not send candy. Students are strongly encouraged to have a water bottle with them in the classroom. This bottle should only contain water. Juice or flavored water spills are sticky messes to clean up.
Communication
Each teacher can be reached by phone, email, or a note sent to school. Email is the best way to contact us. You can always expect to hear back within 24 hours. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with your questions and concerns.
