Block Schedule

Our students have a rotation of 5 different block classes (art, music, PE, STEM, technology). A calendar can be found in students’ Take It Everywhere Binder (TIE Binder).  The calendar will list students’ block schedule.

Switching Classes

All 5th graders are on one of two teams. Mrs. Barnhouse will teach ELA and Ms. Harvin will teach math for their team. Both will teach social studies and science to their homeroom classes. On the other team, Ms. Tison will teach ELA for all 3 classes, Mrs. McMinn will teach math and science, and Mrs McCall will teach math and science. Each teacher will teach social studies to her homeroom class.

PBIS and Social-Emotional Learning

Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) is the framework for behavior used throughout our school.  There are school-wide expectations that correspond with the acronym RISE. RISE stands for respect, integrity, self-control, and effort. We also teach social-emotional skills to help students meet these expectations.

In 5th grade, we reward positive behavior.  Students will track their positive behavior. We will offer frequent rewards for this behavior in the form of special events, activities, and privileges. Students will receive consequences for poor choices or behavior. You will be contacted by note or phone call for serious or repeated problems with behavior.

Attendance

Attendance is VERY important!  Please get your child to school on time (before 7:55 AM).  Free breakfast is available each morning for everyone.  Students can come to the classroom starting at 7:30.

If your child misses a school day, it is school policy that you send a note to explain his/her absence.  You are welcome to send an email in place of a written note. Otherwise, the absence will be counted as unexcused.

Take It Everywhere Binder (TIE Binder)

Every night, your child will bring home their Take It Everywhere Binder.  In the binder there is a calendar to  keep track of the schedule for block and school events.  Please check to know what is going on at school and to know what your child is learning. You can use the binder as a place to put notes or other things that need to be turned in to the teacher. As a reminder, all dismissal changes must be sent in writing.

On Tuesday, a special folder will come home, called the Take It Home Tuesday Folder.  This folder will contain all school communication and paperwork from the week, as well as the work that your child has completed. Often, students are able to make corrections on quizzes and tests for partial credit. They are welcomed to make corrections on classwork but grades for classwork will not be changed.  This is an important folder to check and sign that you have seen each week. Please make sure that this folder is returned to school on Wednesday morning.

Homework

Students will have a reading goal for each quarter. This goal will be introduced the first week of school. Students will record their completed books in their TIE binder. These sheets will be checked throughout the quarter to make sure everyone is on track to meet their goal! Students will also have math practice each week. Problems will be sent home on Monday and should be done by Wednesday, when we will provide feedback. If students need to correct or complete work, the math assignment will then be due on Friday. Once we begin science instruction, students will also have vocabulary cards in their TIE binder. Students can also take home their journals to study, especially before tests.

Conferences

Conferences can be scheduled at any time by contacting the homeroom teacher.  We will also have conferences with everyone in the fall.

Snacks and Food

Fairview Elementary is nut-free.  Please do not send any food items containing nuts to school with your child.  You are welcome to send store-bought treats for your child’s birthday. It is always a good idea to let your child’s teacher know when you plan to do this.

There is not a designated snack time in our 5th grade schedule. Students are welcome to bring in a healthy snack to eat while they are working. Please do not send candy. Students are strongly encouraged to have a water bottle with them in the classroom. This bottle should only contain water. Juice or flavored water spills are sticky messes to clean up.

Communication

Each teacher can be reached by phone, email, or a note sent to school.  You may also send questions or notes in your child’s binder. You can always expect to hear back within 24 hours.  Please don’t hesitate to contact us with your questions and concerns.
