We were able to have a meeting set up with our High School guidance counselor (Mrs. Mckamey) to give us a little insight on how mental health in teens at a public school work. In the time that we had with her, we were able to get a little bit more of an idea of how the school system helps our kids, how many kids reach out, and if these meetings are effective. She had told us on average she has to juggle with about 350 students that are assigned to her. Mrs. Mckamey had described her job as not easy but very one on one or even hands on. She gets to hear new things from new students and gets to even relate to them sometimes. When it comes to mental health issues with students, she would describe no situation like no other. They are all different and that is what she loves so much about her job. If a situation does go beyond her regulations she would have to file a referral for further help with this student. Whether that is with a therapy office or a debrief with a parent.Â
