AP Studio Art is Fox Lane High School’s most advanced art course. Students are eligible to take AP Studio Art in their senior year, after having completed three years of art courses that build a strong foundation in a particular area of interest. Fox Lane High School is proud to offer classes in drawing, painting, mixed media, black and white film photography, digital art and photography, ceramics, filmmaking, public art, and fashion design.
There are three different AP Studio Art courses. These include AP 2-D Art and Design, AP 3-D Art and Design, and AP Drawing. Each of these courses is designed to be the equivalent of a one-semester, foundation-level college course.
Students create a portfolio of work to demonstrate inquiry through art and design as well as development of materials, processes, and ideas over the course of a year. Portfolios include works of art, documentation of their process, and written information about the work presented.
In May, students submit portfolios to the College Board for evaluation based on specific criteria which include skillful synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas as well as sustained investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision.
When students sign up for AP Studio Art they are accepting a huge challenge. Their work is no longer driven by teacher assignments or tasks for skill development; this is an opportunity to discover who they are as individual artists and what concepts they want to explore through their artwork. They are researchers and creators and they take a deep look at their personal lives for inspiration.
AP Studio Art is a transformative experience for students and we take great pride in the meaningful work they create. In a typical school year, the AP Studio Art Exhibit Opening Reception is a celebration dedicated to the accomplishments of these students. Each student designs the display of their Sustained Investigation and proudly stands with their work while family, friends, teachers, administration, and the Board of Education engage them in conversation about what they have created and why. This experience is the pinnacle of their high school art career.
This year, like so many capstone experiences, the AP Studio Art Exhibit was cancelled. While this website cannot replace the emotional experience of an opening reception, we hope it can act as a vehicle for sharing the amazing work of our AP artists. We are exceptionally proud of the perseverance and drive they demonstrated by completing their portfolios during our time of distance learning. When met with adversity they rose to the challenge, which is exactly what artists do.
With admiration, pride and love for our artists,
Mrs. Lappin-Burke & Ms. Kranz
