Artistic Mission Statement:
Through my sustained investigation, I use adaptations of Grimm's Fairy Tales, folk tales, origin stories and urban legends to transform terrible images into beautiful fashion designs. Taking the grim, ugly, scary, painful-to-read parts of each story and creating pieces making it beautiful and using the small details of each story to incorporate into each one. For example, the descriptive words of Ursula’s down bringing inspired the dress style or for my little red riding hood cape. The killing of the wolf inspired the mittens to go along with the cape. Or for the sad and heartbreaking moment when Cinderella's dress was torn and ripped to shreds. I created a style that would fit the criteria of jagged edges and odd fixtures and pieces.
Another question that guided me in my sustained investigation was “can you take certain words and change the context of them through art?” I show this throughout my pieces by reading the stories and incorporate it into my pieces but in reverse. If something such as water was described as “rushing streams bursting out coming over your head violently” in a bad way, I take that and form it in the context of something beautiful. Another question I had to challenge myself was “can I make pieces out of upcycled materials?” I used a lot of my time actually out at thrift stores and asking people for fabrics and clothes they would not need anymore in order to create patterns forms and use as tools to create my pieces. I would also use whatever has been scrapped from art rooms and other places such as scrap fabric that is unusable for certain things, and believe it or not leftover party supplies. Each and every piece has something that has either been from a thrift store, donated to me or has some forms of scrap material in it.
About this Series:
For AP Art my concentration was based on a series of folk tales Grimms' Fairy Tales and origin stories with dark and scary descriptions. My goal through art was to create pieces that can make the scary and grim parts of each story and transform them into something beautiful.
This Piece was inspired by the Utah folk tale of the bear lake monster, an Amphibious bear that eats pray. taking physical features in the monster such as the large ears and the fact that its a bear really inspired certain parts of the piece such as the long 2 piece skirt.
Hachishakusama is an urban legend based in japan about a 8 ft woman who kidnaps people. I used a variation of this story about a young girl who encountered her. The woman crawled out of the bushes to approach the girl. The girl told her family. A witch doctor came to her home and locked her in her room covered in Japanese writings and spells with 4 bowls full of white salt. During one point of the night she noticed the bowls of salt turned black, the Hachishakusama was present. The next day she was sent out of japan for her safety. Using recycled bed sheets, gems, dyed salt, and thrifted plants and objects I was able to create a dress that wasn't big in a way of being 8 feet tall, but big in the style of the dress (ball gown). For the top part of the dress I searched up certain words that were written on the walls and translated to Japanese.
The origin story of the character Ursula was once beautiful until her jealousy took over and turned her evil. In the story it says that the sea choked her and took over her once beautiful body. Using scrap materials, fabric, beads and gems, I created a dress that looked curvy and beautiful with the “sea” taking over her. I made the “sea” have a seaweed texture and look covered in different veins and vine-like gems and embellishments. I also added a cape to the back to show the elegant look she once had. It's a transformable dress where the cape is first used as a fancy cover up to show her before her jealousy but then it flips out into a low back cape revealing the sea taking over her body.
The Grimms' Fairy Tales Don't Open The Secret Door! Has many gore/raw parts in it. One of the parts is a girl who rips open a mattress full of feathers and other stuffing, covers herself in honey and jumps into the mattress to have a bird-like disguise to escape her kidnapper. To achieve this look, I thrifted a furry/squiggly textured bean bag cover to use as the base of the dress. Next I used store bought and real bird feathers found outside to create a shoulder padded look. I then added hidden spots of gold such as on some feathers and on the back corset to bring the honey into play with the dress.
