A Place for Learning
The Library Media Center offers students a quiet place to work, collaborate, explore literature and informational texts as well as access the internet, and research resources. Instructional assistance is available to the students and is a primary goal of the Library Media Specialist. Students (and teachers) need only ask for assistance with research, readers' advisory, instructional technology, and technology help. We all strive to support the needs of the Fox Lane community.
24/7
Students have access to a wealth of information twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week via the library website. Digital content, including eBooks and audiobooks, can be accessed through the website. Research using databases and resource links is also available at all times. Assistance with resources is always available in the library and includes technology help with devices, and downloading and using apps to access digital content. Passwords are required to access the databases. Please contact the library for information.
Internet Access
WiFi hotspots are available for loan to students who do not have internet access at home. These devices are loaned on a weekly basis and all attempts are made to accommodate students in need. Please ask us if you need internet access. We also have a strong partnership with the local public libraries and encourage our users to obtain a library card and use the facilities for internet access and resources, including access to digital content.
Physical Resources
Over 16,000 diverse physical resources are available through the library catalog. Teachers and students seeking titles not in our system are encouraged to make a request through the form on the website, in person, via email or by phone call. We will either obtain the title for inclusion in our collection or will request a loan from the public library for you to pick up at the FLHS library. We seek to create a diverse collection that not only supports our curriculum but encourages self-directed exploration and discovery of literature.
A maker space exists and is being expanded to include opportunities for students' exploration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Whether it be tinkering with circuitry, experimenting with Rube Goldberg contraptions, working with robotics, or creating designs, students are welcome to "play" in self-directed exploration and discovery.
Students are also welcome to work on a puzzle or play a game of chess or checkers in the library to get a temporary break from electronics and academic coursework, quieting their minds and sharpening their focus.
Expected Behaviors and Use
We ask that students respect the needs of their peers by helping to maintain a comfortable, respectful, and quiet atmosphere conducive to study and learning while in the library. We ask that food be consumed outside the library so as not to attract unwanted pests.
With the goal of creating a learning commons model library media center, we are creating areas that meet different needs. We have seven silent study carrels adjacent to the quiet study area where we request students speak as softly as possible to support the needs of those seeking a quiet place to recharge or do academic work. We accommodate quiet group work on the east side of the library (near the windows) to encourage peer collaboration. We have a loft space that is reserved for instructional use or use by clubs or tutors with supervision. Our ThinkSpace is a small room equipped with a large monitor and a whiteboard wall. Group meetings, small classes, and clubs are all welcome to use this space. The Loft and the ThinkSpace must be reserved through the library.
Students who disrupt the atmosphere of the library in any space will be asked to leave the library.
