Biological warfare is the deliberate use of pathogenic organisms or toxins to cause disease and death in humans, animals or crops. It poses a unique threat because outbreaks can spread rapidly without immediate detection. Modern advances in biotechnology have continued to lower the barriers of modifying or recreating dangerous pathogens and continue to increase the risk of both intentional misuse and accidental release. Unlike conventional weapons, biological attacks can be indistinguishable from natural epidemics which makes detection and response much more difficult. Preventing biological warfare is essential to protect human health and maintain international security.
