The First 3 Weeks

At the Bakersfield City School District, we believe a key to a successful school year all begins with building community and positive relationships. As the late Rita Pierson once said, "Kids can't learn from teachers they don't like" moreover, kids can't learn in environments they don't like.

With significant input from our BCSD teachers came about The First 3 Weeks where you will find resources, strategies, and activities to assist teachers and teams in building and encouraging healthy classrooms to maximize learning for the next 180 days. Look for our new TK resources, and some authentic learning experiences throughout.

It is encouraged that schools, grade level teams, and teachers use this tool as a foundation for lesson planning for both the first three weeks of school and at strategic intervals during the remainder of the school year. 

As you navigate the planning tool you will find a menu of options. 

• There will be some site expectations of things that must be done by a certain time (i.e. social contract).

• There are many options to pick some favorite activities you would like to do with your class or explore new activities to try out.  Feel free to keep using your favorites too.

• Don’t forget about our Community Building Slides which will help you continue to build belonging, and teach social skills, mental wellness, substance abuse prevention, and Toolbox/Second Steps lessons for each day of the school year.
