An Assignment is something that must be turned in by a student. An assignment can be created with or without a template.
With an assignment a student may:
Students can view - resource
Students can edit file - collaborative file
Make a copy for each student - individual file
Students can create their own (doc, drawing, slide)
Students can upload any additional content through the add button.
With an assignment, a Teacher has immediate access to any file created in Google Classroom. Feedback can be given while a student is working on the assignment.
This video will show you how to pull an assignment from Google Drive and upload it to your Classroom. You can also learn how to upload a student tutorial video into your classroom!
Use numbers to name assignments - #001 First Assignment. This organizes the folders and files in Google Drive. Use text you and your students (and their parents) can easily understand.
Add any needed resources (templates, links, articles, videos, etc.) that students will need to complete an assignment together. Group these resources in the order they are needed.
When you want students to have an individual copy of the Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drawings, or Jamboard templates, make sure to change Students can view file to Make a copy for each student.
Make an assignment and post it to Google Classroom at a later time.
Great for a daily assignment can be made at one time then posted every morning.
Rubrics give students and teachers clear expectations about learning activities. A teacher can create a rubric in Google Classroom, reuse a previous rubric, or (my favorite method) import a rubric.
Modify this template or choose a rubric from this folder.
When creating a Google Classroom assignment, select +Rubric.
Click Import from Sheets
Locate the rubric in Google Drive and select Add.
Click Save.
Create an assignment for individual students.
Create an assignment.
On the right-hand side, look for All students.
Uncheck All students.
Check only the students who will complete this assignment.
As always, click Save.
Create an Assignment.
Type the title, directions, and topic.
Select CREATE.
Click on SLIDES.
Give the Slides a title.
Go back to the assignment.
Change Students can view to Students CAN EDIT.
Yes, it will be crazy in the beginning. Yes, you will need to remind students to ONLY write on their Slide, but the work is worth it when students learn from each other and teachers can give feedback in one place.
Jamboard is an interactive whiteboard. Teachers can create word sorts, prompt discussions, or teach math. The phone app has even more options than the web app.
Option 1: Teach to demonstrate
Option 2: Share edit access with students (see video)
Option 3: Assign to individual students
To learn more about Jamboard, click here.
Optional: include a rubric or change graded to ungraded. This sets clear expectations for students and helps the teacher score the assignment.
Save time by reusing a rubric template.
Add a 30-second to 1 minute Screencastify video for verbal and visual directions.
If Screencastify is not already installed, go to Screencastify.com and click on the option to install to Chrome in the upper right corner.

Assign Activities out of the Google Classroom but still be able to see students work and give feedback.
Use the Insert--> Image--> Camera feature to have students take pictures of physical papers and projects for you to review, assess and give feedback on. For Example: Create a mountain out of dirt from the backyard, use water to show what erosion does to change the landform and either create A flipgrid video of the process or take a picture and explain it
Include a Due Date to add the assignment to the 1) Upcoming section for students and 2) the weekly Guardian Summary email for parents.
Place the responsibility of checking for plagiarism in the students' hands. Students can run the report up to three times in the assignment. This helps students stop accidental plagiarism while improving their writing skills.
Open the files you want to use.
Create an assignment in Google Classroom.
Add the file.
Do you want students have View, Edit as a class or Make their own copy?
Click Assign.
You will be prompted to make a Copy.
If you selected View or Edit for the file, you can now modify the file. If you selected Make a copy, you cannot make any changes.
