UNIT 1: The Drawbridge Challenge
In this five-day engineering design unit, students use the Hummingbird Robotics Kit to design, build, and program a motorized drawbridge. Working individually and in teams, students begin by exploring how servo motors create motion, then sketch and collaborate to choose a bridge design. Over multiple build days, they construct their drawbridge with cardboard and integrate servos to lift and lower the roadway. Students follow a structured process of planning, building, programming, and improving their projects, applying real-world concepts of mechanical engineering, robotics, and coding. The unit concludes with team demonstrations and individual motion diagrams, where students label their bridges and use arrows to show movement.Â
