Alex has been active in the software world since he started his career as an Analyst in 2011. He had various roles with a focus on software asset management, data analytics, and software development. He walked in the shoes of an analyst, auditor, advisor, and software engineer, being involved in building SAM tools, amongst other data-focused projects.
In 2020, he co-founded Licenseware to commoditize SAM tooling and help companies save millions on software.
Rich was probably the first person to present on the necessary alignment of ITAM & FinOps in 2019. Since then, he has focused on demonstrating how FinOps underpins any organisation’s software, SaaS, and cloud management strategy.

Alexander has spent over 25 years working in Microsoft licensing and cost management. He runs SAMexpert, an independent consultancy headquartered in England that advises enterprises and cloud infrastructure providers on Microsoft agreements, compliance, and Azure spend.
SAMexpert does not resell Microsoft licences or hold any Microsoft partnership. The absence of any Microsoft partnership lets Alexander represent clients without divided loyalties when negotiating agreements or responding to audit claims. Much of his work involves helping procurement, finance, and IT teams understand what is genuinely negotiable in Microsoft deals and where costs tend to hide.
His current focus is on how AI changes the economics of Microsoft agreements. Copilot subscriptions, Azure OpenAI consumption, and bundled AI features are creating cost centres that many organisations struggle to forecast. Alexander helps clients work out what they are actually buying, whether they need it, and how to structure terms that make sense for their situation.
He writes and speaks regularly on Microsoft licensing and hosts a YouTube channel with over 500 videos on the subject.
