The purpose of Title 1, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) is to help states and school districts meet the needs of academically at-risk students by providing financial assistance. The goal of Title 1 is to deliver additional instructional services and activities that will support at-risk students. These students are identified as failing or most at-risk of failing the challenging performance standards of the state in both math and literacy. It ensures that all students have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education.
In Byron Center Public School district, the Title 1 program serves students at Robert L. Nickels Intermediate School who have demonstrated that they are in need of additional academic support.
The federal government provides funding to each state. Then, each State Educational Agency sends money to its school districts. How much money a school receives is dependent on the amount of low-income students who attend that school.
Nickels is a Targeted Assistance Title 1 school, which means that our funding is used to provide additional educational services to students who are MOST at need. Students do NOT have to be from low-income families to receive Title I services.
Our Title 1 program offers:
special instructional learning spaces
small group instruction time
additional teachers and paraprofessionals
opportunities for professional development for school staff
a variety of supplemental teaching methods
a more individualized program for at-risk students
