The School Counseling program at Bishop & Petronila Elementary Schools provides a comprehensive curriculum to meet the needs of all students. Our developmentally appropriate curriculum will address the academic, career, and personal/social/emotional needs of each student in a safe and nurturing environment. All students will be provided support and guidance and we believe our students can achieve and grow into life-long learners who are prepared to meet the demands of an increasingly diverse society.
The staff and students will work together to achieve high educational expectations and success. The school counseling program at Bishop & Petronila Elementary School supports all students while assisting them to recognize their full potential as learners and citizens of our community. The school counseling program is based on the following beliefs:
All students can learn and grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
All students have unique strengths.
We must work to actively engage children, families, and community members, and fully develop them as partners in the educational experience.
All students have the right to participate in a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate school counseling program delivered by a licensed school counselor.
The school counseling program follows the Texas School Counseling model and consists of four components: a guidance curriculum, individual student planning, responsive services, and system support.
* Promote positive attitudes among students towards self, family, peers and community.
* Assist students in learning how school performance relates to future opportunities.
*Develop and delivering classroom guidance lessons that teach skills such as decision making, resolving conflict and respecting others.
* Work with students, parents and school staff to identify learning needs and to design interventions to enhance student success.
* Help students to recognize and make the best of their abilities through individual counseling.
* Provide support during a personal crisis.
* Work with students on attendance issues.
* Coordinate referrals to outside agencies.
* Develop student career awareness.
* Help to create a safe and positive learning experience for all.
* Provide information and/or referrals for community resources to families.
The counselor presents lessons in every classroom (PK-5) that teach skills such as conflict resolution, bully awareness and prevention, test preparation, study skills, valuing diversity, character education, social skills and career exploration.
Short-term individual counseling is available to students at the request of parents/guardians, students, and teachers to meet the needs of all students expressing difficulties dealing with academic achievement, personal concerns, normal developmental tasks, etc.
When a structured series of individual counseling sessions is deemed appropriate, parental permission is requested and parental reinforcement of concepts introduced in counseling sessions is encouraged.
Group counseling is available to all students and may be requested by students, parents/guardians or teachers. Plans are in the works on small group counseling.
Parental permission letters will be sent home prior to group participation. More information to come on topics and details.
