Generative AI Tools Available at BC Law

BEFORE YOU START

No generative AI tools—including the ones BC licenses—may be used with "Confidential" or "Strictly Confidential" data, as defined by the Boston College Data Security Policy. For more information on BC's data classifications and what data may be entered into BC-approved generative AI tools, see BC Law's Guidance on Data Security and Privacy.

BC-Licensed (University-Wide) Tools

Licensed by BC for students, faculty (full and part time), and staff.

BC-licensed tools include data protection, which means that user data remain private per the terms of the licenses and are not used to train the underlying models. Nonetheless, only "Public" and "Internal" data, as defined by Boston College Data Security Policy, may be entered into them. See BC Law's Guidance on Data Security and Privacy for details.

Google Gemini

Gemini gives you direct access to Google AI. Get help with writing, planning, learning, and more.

To get started with Gemini:

1. Sign into your BC Google account using your BC email & secondary password.

2. On the top right, click the Google apps menu (aka apps launcher), then click Gemini.

   • Notice a shield appears next to the chat prompt, which indicates your data is protected.

Gemini Notebook 

Gemini Notebook is a research and writing assistant and note-taking tool that allows you to upload sources and create custom notebooks to interact with using Google’s Gemini AI models. Upload PDFs, websites, videos, audio files, Google Docs, and more, and Gemini Notebook will help you summarize, make connections between sources, and generate new ideas.

To get started with Gemini Notebook:

1. Sign into your BC Google account using your BC email & secondary password.

2. On the top right, click the Google apps menu (aka apps launcher), then scroll down to click NotebookLM.

Microsoft Copilot 

Microsoft Copilot is a generative AI platform designed for individual use to generate text, images, and audio.

To get started with Copilot:

1. Go to: m365.cloud.microsoft/chat

2. Click Sign in.

3. Enter your username@bc.edu

4. When prompted, select Work or school account.

5. On the BC Single Sign On (SSO) login page, enter your BC Credentials (the username and password you use for Agora Portal) and complete BC 2-Step Verification.

6. Once logged in, you will see a shield in the upper right (next to the New chat button), indicating that your information is protected.

BC Law Tools

Available to the BC Law community. Data rules may differ from the rules above. See BC Law's Guidance on Data Security and Privacy for details.

Harvey AI

Harvey is an AI platform built specifically for legal work. It helps with tasks such as contract review and analysis, due diligence, compliance, and litigation.

To get started with Harvey:

1. Go to: app.harvey.ai

2. Enter your username@bc.edu.

3. A one-time passcode will be sent to your BC email account. Enter it and select Continue.

Lexis Protégé

Protégé is Lexis' next-generation Legal AI Assistant that provides assistance with legal tasks including research, drafting, and summarizing cases and other legal documents. All students, faculty, and staff have access to Protégé through BC Law's academic Lexis account.

Westlaw CoCounsel

CoCounsel is Westlaw's AI-assisted workflow platform. CoCounsel provides a suite of AI tools to assist law students and lawyers with a variety of legal tasks. All students, faculty, and staff have access to CoCounsel through BC Law's academic Westlaw account.
